Shared Waters Map
In 2024, the Shared Waters Map was updated and expanded to show the full extent of the New York City Water Trail, along with the five boroughs in their entirety. As with the original 2018 map, the full scope of the city’s maritime operations are laid out in an interactive, web-based format. The map will continue to be updated as new locations are added and old sites are converted or updated. A large-format, printed copy of the map was produced for the 2024 Shared Harbor Day.

This 2018 map/educational poster was a joint effort of the Water Trail Association, the Education Subcommittee of the Coast Guard’s Harbor Safety, Navigation and Operations Committee, and students at The New School who originally developed the map as a class project. The basic idea was to give both commercial and recreational mariners — “captains and paddlers” — a better sense of where various types of vessels were likely to be launching, landing and operating, and thus reduce the chances of conflict or an accident.
